As I sit and watch as the new Pope is announced and appears for the first time, I am reminded of many other events that have also taken place on this day.
Two events I that remember, and that are directly tied together - The Oklahoma City Bombing (Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building) ten years ago and the burning Branch Davidian compound twelve years ago.
Other moments in history on April 19th:
- The beginning of the American Revolution (1775)
- Ride of Paul Revere
- First blood shed in the America Civil War (1861)
and why can’t i delete this post
My brain is mush - and its getting mushier. Actually, is got about nine gillion things running around in it. It should land sometime in the next month - or maybe never.
Thigns that have contributed to this include - watching The Woodsman (several of the movies which only aired in “select cities” are now out on DVD), and reading the following (it was a full reading weekend - and some are not quite done) - from Brian McLaren - The Last Word, and the Word After That and A Generous Orthodoxy , from Leonard Sweet - Out of the Question, Into the Mystery , from C.S. Lewis The Great Divorce, and from Dallas Willard (he only got a chapter - for a Bible Study I am in) The Spirit of the Disciplines. Waiting in the wings are Tony Campolo’s book - Speaking My Mindand Hotel Rwanda
Hopefully in the future I will process some of it here in more detail. Not today.
The Silence Devo was last Wednesday (I am really not sure what to think about this upcoming one - we will wait and see.) It ended up being silence in that there was nothing spoken. All of the normal elements of our midweek gathering were there - prayers, thoughts/message, songs, etc. But it was silence for over an hour. A gathering of college students silent. Next time, we will change some things, and take the journey farther into silence.
My is old. And softball reminds me of that. Each Friday our women spend time at the local park - at the batting cages (and playing catch) together. (Yes Greg, when I am working I get to go to the batting cages. I don’t have to sneak off to go.) It is a good time for them to spend together and get excercise at the same time.
Greg - look at you making such a generous offer.
Here is a picture of where I spent 2 years of my life - taken this summer (during ACU Leadership Kadesh Life Camps). A lovely picture of ACU’s Bible Building (which now has somone else’s name in front of it) - home of the Graduate School of Theology - and where several of my friends are still hanging out.
That fine camera by the way is the digital rebel. look at the colors as they come through the window. ahhh west texas sunsets.
